How to defeat Thisobald Torm in Baldur's Gate 3
Seeing the player, the monster will start the dialogue himself — there are two ways to complete it, and both involve challenges:
- Talk Tisobald to death using checks, while trying not to try his drink;
- Defeat an enemy in battle.
Therefore, before entering the tavern, prepare thoroughly.
No fight
Choose one of the following heroes to make it easier to deal with Tisobald's checks at the bar:
- Astarion - has high manual dexterity and charisma, which is useful for inventing stories and stalling for time;
- Karlach - She doesn't care for Tisobald's swill, while the rest of the team are more likely to drop dead from it. Making up stories checks aren't much of a problem for the girl either, due to the Thaumaturgy transformation focus making intimidation and execution easier. We advise you to choose Karlach for the age.
In the dialogue, Tisobald will offer the hero Drink 3 times and tell him 2 exciting stories. With the help of checks, it is necessary to avoid drinking at all costs (the exception is Karlach) and compose epic stories from life. If you hold out, then in the end Tisobald, in the literal sense of the word, will burst from the amount of booze he drank.
So, using Karlach as an example, let’s look at which replicas need to be selected sequentially:
- First - “Who are you, hell take you?” or “What do you serve here?”
- Next, select the “Take a mug” action. Reply “No. I won't drink" will anger Tisobald and trigger the fight.
- Karlach can more easily digest alcohol of dubious quality due to the fact that she - barbarian. Choose an action with the advantage of a double roll "Sip the beer" [DC - up to 14].
- Now you need to tell the bartender the first story based on your travels. Test your execution skill to the limit, but note that the difficulty of each story's roll varies [DC - 16-21]. Use Karlach's Thaumaturgy transformation focus to roll 2 dice.
- Drink again using a barbarian check [DC - up to 16]. From now on, you can ask Tisobald questions about Keterik Torm. His answers will lead to clues for the quest
- Now and tell the second fascinating story [KS - 16-21].
- The last test for tolerance to Tisobald's swill. Choose the action “Boom! Bool! Bool!” [KS - to 18].
If you did everything correctly, you will see Tisobald explode from the amount of alcohol he drank. The undead wandering around the tavern after the death of the winemaker will remain indifferent to the heroes.
For other characters there are options for checking endurance or sleight of hand: in the first case, the heroes will drink scalding beer, trying not to get drunk, and in the second, they will pretend to enjoy the winemaker’s drink [Astarion’s CS - 16, 16, 18]. These are alternative options for stalling for time in dialogue with the boss.
In battle
If you don’t want to have intimate gatherings with the enemy, you can immediately enter the battle. The cursed visitors and tavern workers will side with the undead bartender in battle - 4 mobs in total. They are ordinary undead that are easy to cut down with physical attacks. Briefly about the health of the main boss:
- Normal difficulty - 288 HP;
- Tactics - 374 HP.
During combat, the enemy will alternately be in 3 main states:
- Status “Stupidity” - the monster is immune to cutting, piercing, crushing and thunder damage. The boss can only be hit with elemental, beam and necrotic attacks. In this phase, Tisobald activates the “Burping” status, associated with the element whose damage was dealt to him. In other words, fire damage to the boss activates fire burp, ice damage activates ice burp, and so on. Only beam and power attacks do not cause a reaction. Belch ensures Tisobald will use a powerful elemental AoE attack on his next turn.
- After using 3 elemental burps, Tisobald enters the “ed Out” state: the monster falls to the ground, misses 1 turn, and becomes vulnerable to cutting, piercing, crushing, thunder, radiant, and force damage.
- On the next turn, he gets up and acquires the “Sobering” status, in which he has neither resistances nor vulnerabilities. On its next turn, the monster restores the “Duperness” status, and everything begins in a new circle.
Based on the logic of changing statuses, here's how to kill Tisobald Torm:
- Don't attack the boss with physical attacks while he's in Daze.
- Manipulate Tisobald's burp types to reduce incoming damage by allies. For example, drink a fire protection potion before the battle, and in battle try to cause only fire burps, attacking only with fire - this will minimize the damage from the boss’s dangerous elemental AoE attacks.
- After another burp, Tisobald will summon a hallucination. It kills with one hit (5 HP), but can also be useful in battle, attracting the attention of the damned winemaker.
- Save your most powerful moves and spells until the “Out of Power” and “Sober Up” statuses are activated, and then unleash the full might of your heroes on your opponent.
- If you are experiencing difficulties, then in the phases of weakness of the boss, drink a speed potion to perform 2 times more actions.
- Regardless of active status, Tisobald does not like radiant damage: Blood of Lathander and the paladin's skills will serve you well in battle.
- Cursed zombies don't do much damage, but they get in the way. Select a fighter to deal with them quickly.
After defeating the monster, remove the Worn Key from its body, which opens the metal door behind the tavern bar - the age leads to the alchemy laboratory.
Awards
For drinking too much of Tisobald, you will receive the following prizes:
- Alchemical ingredients and a Worn Key to the laboratory located in the backyard of the tavern;
- Approximately 520 experience for all checks;
- Inspiration Artist “You’ll Never Believe It” and an additional +75 experience;
- Items in laboratory chests: various toxins and potions, alchemical ingredients, Drunken Scum Club, Gloves of Stench.
If you choose the path through combat, the prizes, including the amount of experience, will be identical, but you will not receive inspiration points.
Is it worth drinking with Tysobald Torme?
Any hero can survive Tisobald's beer if he es 3 endurance tests or sleight of hand [KS - 14-18], And 2 per execution [KS - 16-21]: will drink (or pretend to) 3 mugs of his drink and convincingly tell 2 stories. If the character fails stamina checks, he will succumb to alcohol and receive the following debuffs:
- Intoxication has disadvantage on Dexterity and Charisma checks;
- Poison has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.
These statuses reduce the chance of telling an impressive story, as well as an attack in battle. If the execution check fails, Tisobald will not like the story told and will give it another try. If the following story does not seem convincing to the monster, then the team will enter into an extremely unfavorable battle, because 2 powerful debuffs will be applied to one of the allies.
Karlach, being barbarian, apparently she hasn’t drank that much in her life, so the stinking swill doesn’t scare her. The demoness's checks have the advantage of always rolling 2 dice. In this regard, we recommend the following strategy:
- Take Karlach and defeat Tisobald in an alcoholic duel. In total, all checks will give approximately 520 experience: +200 for 4 checks, +320 for the death of the boss (values on “Tactics”);
- If you want another +200 experience, then kill the neutral zombies wandering around.
If you choose aggression from the very beginning, you will lose 200 experience points in 4 checks.

I ed the tactic easily. I placed barrels in narrow places and stupidly threw fire at them with a sorcerer and a priest) (I didn't talk to him straight to the point)
She's a tiefling, not a demoness :)
You can also buy a crossbow from Roa for strength and it deals damage at any stage
