Classes and specializations determine the direction in which the character will develop: combat, magic or stealth. Choosing a class in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered allows you to get a starting set of skills and attributes to speed up progress and immediately start leveling up in the craft you are interested in.
In this guide, we will examine all existing specializations and their representatives, consider their skills and attributes, and also tell you how to choose the strongest class at the start.
The best ones were reviewed in separate articles birth signs.
TES IV Remastered Class Overview
When you go through the prologue you will be asked to choose birth sign, and later the class. The character's specialization is divided into three categories, each of which includes 7 "professions".
The battle | Magic | Stealth |
Martial Artist | Mage | Thief |
Barbarian | Wizard | Agent |
Paladin | Battle Mage | Acrobat |
Knight | Healer | Assassin |
Archer | Warrior Mage | Monk |
Scout | Inquisitor | Piligrim |
Tramp | Blade of the Night | Bard |
The class determines the preferred attributes and a basic set of core skills. There are no subclasses in the game, but any option can be customized by creating your own build. You will not be able to change the choice of specialization after completing the training.
Martial Artist
- Specialization: the fight.
- Attributes: strength, endurance.
- Skills: athletics, block, blade, gunsmith, melee, blunt weapon, heavy armor.
Warriors are serious fighters who are proficient with all types of weapons. Their core skills cover everything that might be needed in combat, making the role well suited for beginners due to its simplicity.
The Imperial, Nord, Orc, or Redguard races are good choices for this character type, as they all receive bonuses to their preferred attributes and stats.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Proficiency in handling most types of weapons. | Weak in roleplaying and negotiations due to races that match the style. |
The class is easy to learn and suitable for beginners. | The play style is extremely boring when compared to mages or stealth classes. |
Easily completes content until the very end of the game without placing any serious demands on the build. |
Barbarian
- Specialization: the fight.
- Attributes: strength, speed.
- Skills: athletics, block, blade, light armor, gunsmith, melee, blunt weapons.
Barbarians focus on strength and speed, and simply charge into battle without fear of damage. Their skill set is good for their role, but still less effective when compared to sorcerers.
The best barbarians would be Imperials, Nords or Redguards, as these races are quite capable combine strength and mobility stats. Orc will also fit this archetype, but will lose due to movement penalties.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
High durability and good damage. | Speed is not as important as endurance, which is why the barbarian loses to the warrior in stats. |
Easy to learn class. | Weak set of core skills. |
Paladin
- Specialization: fight.
- Attributes: strength, willpower.
- Skills: athletics, restoration, blade, destruction, melee, blunt weapons, heavy armor.
The Paladin uses restoration magic to regenerate himself and heal allies, and his skills with a blade and club make him good at close combat.
For greater effectiveness, you can choose the birth sign "Virgo", and as a race take a Breton, Imperial from Colovia or East Nord.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Ability to heal yourself and allies. | Little flexibility in magic, spells are more focused on defense rather than attack. |
Durability and high melee damage.
Ability to create a good starting build with the appropriate race and birth sign. |
Knight
- Specialization: fight.
- Attributes: strength, personality.
- Skills: block, illusion, blade, speech, melee, bludgeoning, heavy armor.
Knights are still the same representatives of the combat specialization, distinguished by their ability for eloquence and communication, which allows them to eliminate enemies not only by force, but also by diplomacy.
By investing points in strength, personality and endurance during the game, you can start as an Imperial knight to immediately get a buff to your charm.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Powerful combat skills and defense. | Limited magical abilities. |
High health and damage resistance. | Mediocre endurance and mobility. |
Good stats for roleplaying and diplomacy. |
Archer
- Specialization: fight.
- Attributes: agility, strength.
- Skills: blade, light armor, gunsmith, sneak, melee, marksman, blunt weapon.
The Archer hits targets from afar and is a simple and reliable build. With agility and strength as key stats, a character with this setup is versatile in most scenarios.
By upgrading your armor parameters, you can become an even more resilient hero. At the start, the race of a dark elf, khajiit or redguard will suit the shooter.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Good at long range attacks with a bow or crossbow. | Weak melee defense. |
Ease of dodging attacks and avoiding damage. |
Scout
- Specialization: fight.
- Attributes: speed, endurance.
- Skills: acrobatics, alchemy, athletics, block, blade, light armor, gunsmith.
Scouts focus on wilderness movement and have a handy set of skills to ensure survivability. The profession is primarily designed for close combat, so it's worth investing in stamina.
For a better start, the Redguard or Nord races are suitable, which by default receive a bonus to the necessary stats.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Stealth and agility, allowing for stealth play and reconnaissance. | Low resistance to damage in combat. |
Good speed and mobility. |
Tramp
- Specialization: fight.
- Attributes: speed, personality.
- Skills: alchemy, athletics, block, illusion, blade, light armor, trade.
Rogues combine mobility and diplomacy, dealing blows and overcoming difficulties with fortitude, but the class is weak in almost every stat.
By investing points into strength, personality and endurance, you can start with the Imperial race to immediately get a buff to charm.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Well suited for social manipulation with NPCs. | Extremely weak in open combat. |
Excellent for tasks involving stealth and covert action. | It is a sort of middle ground between combat and stealth specializations, which is why it is not good enough in either direction. |
Mage
- Specialization: magic.
- Attributes: intelligence, willpower.
- Skills: alchemy, restoration, change, illusion, mysticism, summoning, destruction.
The Mage is the most standard and balanced class of its specialization. A character with such a focus is ready for successful completion and good damage from the start, this is an excellent build for a "pure" sorcerer.
For a mage, it's worth choosing a suitable race, such as a Breton or a High Elf, to get a boost to key stats.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
A wide selection of destruction, restoration and illusion spells. | Weak in melee combat and very vulnerable to physical attacks. |
Flexibility in combat, allowing attacks at long range.
Good defensive abilities. |
Wizard
- Specialization: magic.
- Attributes: intelligence, endurance.
- Skills: alchemy, restoration, alteration, mysticism, summoning, destruction, heavy armor.
The Sorcerer is a magic tank that emphasizes heavy armor over illusions. This allows them to be more confident in close combat. The class relies on spellcasters who want to have a variety of tools at their disposal while staying closer to the action.
A Thorn Marsh Argonian, a Breton of any origin, or a High Elf would be a good fit for this build to immediately get a serious boost to Intelligence.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Powerful attack spells with destruction and summoning of creatures. | Not much health and stamina compared to combat specialization classes. |
Strong dark magic. | Can be difficult to master due to the mixing of two directions. |
Ability to hold up well in close combat. |
Battle Mage
- Specialization: magic.
- Attributes: intelligence, strength.
- Skills: alchemy, alteration, blade, mysticism, summoning, destruction, bludgeoning weapon.
Battlemages are similar to the Warrior Mage in many ways, but they focus on strength and intelligence. This build starts with a large number of skills, allowing for a wider range of spellcasting.
The best race for a battle mage is a Breton, as it immediately gives a good boost to intelligence. Additionally, you can consider a high elf, which provides the same buffs.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
A combination of combat skills and destructive magic. | Not as effective in witchcraft as a pure magician. |
Versatility that allows you to fight in both long-range and close combat. |
Healer
- Specialization: magic.
- Attributes: personality, willpower.
- Skills: alchemy, restoration, change, illusion, eloquence, destruction, trade.
Healers only do one thing - heal. They have no ability to deal constant damage unless they max out their destruction. They have no skill with blunt or bladed weapons, making them incredibly vulnerable.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Specializes in healing himself and his allies. | Vulnerable to any type of damage, especially in close combat. |
No normal attacking skills.
The healer's gameplay boils down to one task, which can quickly become boring. |
Warrior Mage
- Specialization: magic.
- Attributes: willpower, endurance.
- Skills: block, restoration, change, illusion, blade, destruction, heavy armor.
The Warrior Mage is one of the best classes in the game, offering the perfect combination of melee combat and magic use. This set will allow you to cope with any difficulties at every stage of the game, ensuring your survivability.
As a race for a warrior mage, you can choose an Orc for bonuses to Willpower, a Breton for Intelligence and Willpower, or a Nord for Endurance stats.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
A strong combination of melee and magic skills. | Less focus: A character who relies on two directions at once may ultimately fail in both. |
A versatile set of skills. | High requirements for skill distribution and mana. |
Scalability from two most popular attributes.
Strong defense and good survivability. |
Inquisitor
- Specialization: magic.
- Attributes: intelligence, dexterity.
- Skills: alchemy, athletics, security (hacking), mysticism, summoning, destruction, marksman.
Inquisitors are somewhat similar to the warrior-mage, but they specialize in archery rather than melee combat. The class would be an order of magnitude stronger if it had more stamina, but in the current conditions it is significantly vulnerable.
For the Inquisitor, you can choose the Argonian race with the Thorn Marsh background to increase intelligence, a Breton, or a High Elf.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
A combination style that uses destruction magic and skills to destroy enemies. | Low mobility, limiting flexibility in stealth operations. |
Good protection against magical attacks. |
Blade of the Night
- Specialization: magic.
- Attributes: willpower, speed.
- Skills: acrobatics, athletics, restoration, alteration, blade, light armor, destruction.
The Nightblade strikes from the shadows and relies on agility and an effective combination of destruction and blade. In some ways, the profession is similar to the Assassin build, but without the accuracy.
You can choose an Orc as a race if you want to immediately get a good Willpower stat. A Breton of the Sisters origin would also be a good option, so as not to sacrifice speed.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
A good combination of magic and stealth. | Weak defense and vulnerability in open combat. |
Use of shadow magic and destruction. |
Thief
- Specialization: secrecy.
- Attributes: speed, agility.
- Skills: acrobatics, security (hacking), speech, light armor, sneak, marksman, trade.
Thieves specialize in picking locks, selling stolen goods, and occasionally shooting at targets. A thief's skills are really good, but an agent does everything the same, only better.
A good thief would be an Argonian with the Arnesian background, a Khajiit of any background, or a Wood Elf.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Stealth and agility, suitable for stealth and thievery. | Weak defense in open combat. |
Fast and maneuverable play thanks to light armor. | Damage weaknesses that the agent does not have. |
Agent
- Specialization: secrecy.
- Attributes: personality, dexterity.
- Skills: acrobatics, security (hacking), illusion, eloquence, sneak, marksman, trade.
The Agent is a cross between an archer, an acrobat, and a rogue. This archetype focuses on illusions to slip between enemies and distract them. It combines many of the best features of other classes.
The agent will become much stronger if you choose the Imperial race to immediately get a boost to eloquence and maximize your diplomatic abilities.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Flexibility and versatility, the hero can use both magic and stealth. | May not be as strong in combat or magic as other builds. |
Perfect for stealth missions. | It is difficult to distribute resources correctly. |
Good predisposition for manipulating NPCs. |
Acrobat
- Specialization: secrecy.
- Attributes: agility, endurance.
- Skills: acrobatics, security (hacking), block, blade, eloquence, sneak, shooter.
Acrobat is one of the weaker classes, specializing in agility and endurance, but in practice his Blade perk requires strength, which this path simply does not have.
If you still decide to play the game through an acrobat, you can strengthen him with the race of an Argonian, Khajiit, Wood Elf for agility or a Nord for endurance.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Agility and maneuverability. | Vulnerability in battle. |
High evasion rate. | Inconsistency between perks and attributes. |
Assassin
- Specialization: secrecy.
- Attributes: speed, intelligence.
- Skills: acrobatics, alchemy, security (hacking), blade, light armor, sneak, marksman.
The Assassin focuses on stealth kills, making it the best pre-made class for stealth-oriented characters. As you level up, level up Sneak to keep your core skills effective.
A wood elf, who immediately gets 50 speed, is well suited for this role, as is an Argonian, who stands out for his intelligence and speed at the same time.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Specializes in stealth assassinations. | Vulnerable in open battles. |
Uses stealth and poison to eliminate enemies. |
Monk
- Specialization: secrecy.
- Attributes: agility, willpower.
- Skills: acrobatics, athletics, security (hacking), alteration, sneak, melee, marksman.
The monk relies on stealth and athletic prowess, which is why he doesn't have good damage. Agility and willpower, which are the preferred attributes, will make the character extremely vulnerable.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Uses spells to improve health and defense. | Few attack spells. |
Good at hand-to-hand combat. |
Piligrim
- Specialization: secrecy.
- Attributes: personality, endurance.
- Skills: security (hacking), block, speech, light armor, gunsmith, trade, blunt weapons.
Pilgrims are designed for players who want to focus as much as possible on traveling the world, interacting with people, and surviving on the brink of death. This class is the local version of an "adventurer," but the skill set is many times worse than that of a bard who performs the same tasks.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Specializes in health restoration and spiritual magic. | Limited combat and destruction abilities. |
Can fight and use magic. |
Bard
- Specialization: secrecy.
- Attributes: personality, intelligence.
- Skills: alchemy, block, illusion, blade, speech, light armor, trade.
Bards focus on alchemy, illusion, and speech to catch their opponents off guard. They are somewhat similar to rogues, but offer a wider range of melee and spell options, making them ideal for Bretons.
Advantages | Disadvantages |
Emphasis on illusion magic and . | The class is extremely weak in offensive actions. |
Perfect for team play. | |
Able to play through diplomacy. |
Which class to choose in TES 4 Remastered
Next, we will analyze which class to choose for each specialization in the game.
Combat
The best combat specialization classes are:
- Martial Artist - copes well with hand-to-hand combat in heavy armor, has high strength and endurance.
- Archer - a representative of long-range combat, using light and medium armor for mobility.
- Paladin - An excellent fighter, capable of healing himself and his allies, while fighting with melee weapons.
- Knight - an analogue of the Paladin, using personal qualities for convictions instead of healing.
Magic
For magic specialization, these classes are worth considering:
- Warrior Mage - one of the best attack builds, combining magic skills, blade and block.
- Blade of the Night - A true master of light armor and acrobatics, capable of alternating close-range stealth kills with magical attacks for open combat.
- Mage - a classic representative of this specialization for experienced players, focusing only on magic.
- Wizard - a similar representative of the classical school of magic, capable of surviving open battles close. Suitable for beginners.
Secretive
For stealth play, here are some of the best stealth builds to consider:
- Assassin - is distinguished by speed and intelligence, as well as skills in acrobatics, shooting and blade handling.
- Thief - relies on agility and speed, replacing brute force with eloquence and trade.
- Bard - the best class for persuading NPCs.
- Piligrim - a universal archetype for exploration, ranged and melee combat.
Собственный
A great option for your own class would be a combination of Assassin and Warrior-Mage:
- Specialization: magic.
- Preferred Attributes: intelligence, willpower.
- Basic skills: security (hacking), block, recovery, illusion, blade, light armor, marksman.
This set of skills is relatively simple, but it is enough to complete the entire game without any obstacles.
Tier list of classes
Having reviewed all the representatives of each specialization, it is worth summing up and compiling a tier list of classes:
S dash | Warrior Mage, Sorcerer, Bard, Warrior |
A-dash | Agent, Inquisitor, Paladin, Assassin, Mage |
B-dash | Archer, Knight, Nightblade, Barbarian |
C-dash | Monk, Scout, Acrobat |
D-dash | Rogue, Pilgrim, Battle Mage |
F-dash | Thief, Healer |
S dash combines high survivability with powerful and versatile gameplay. The Warrior-Mage and Sorcerer combine melee combat and magic perfectly, the Bard is effective thanks to illusions and social skills, and the Warrior stands out with huge damage and simplicity.
A-dash Contains classes with excellent stealth or ranged combat capabilities.
B-dash includes classes that have a clear focus but certain limitations. The Archer and Knight are strong in specific roles but less versatile. The Nightblade is inferior to other powerful hybrids, and the Barbarian is strong offensively but has low defense.
C-dash requires a lot of effort to unlock potential. Monk and Acrobat have unique mechanics, but require time to unlock attributes and skills.
D- and F-tier Displays character types with narrow capabilities or gameplay difficulties. The Thief and Healer have very low damage and too narrow a specialization, which greatly limits them in combat. The Battle Mage and Pilgrim are inferior to similar classes in versatility and defense.
How to create your own class
If you have studied all the existing specializations and have not found an interesting class for yourself, you can create your own:
- In the archetype selection menu, click " class".
- Decide and choose one of three specializations.
- Add two key attributes to the class.
- Switching between specialization tabs, add 7 core skills, which will form the build.
When choosing skills, keep in mind that acrobatics and athletics are not as good as they seem at first glance. Melee damage is also somewhat overrated, which is why it is better to look towards magic. Almost every build will require stamina and recovery, these are extremely important parameters for any build.
We hope that the guide about all classes in The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion remaster allowed you to choose a specialization to your liking. If you have any questions, ask them in comments, we will definitely answer. In the special section read other useful game guides.
